The 6 critical questions you need to ask your next Facebook ads experts before you hire them.

There are certain questions and research I should be conducting before working with a client. I know that just because an agency or freelancer looks competent does not necessarily mean they are qualified for the position. In my capacity as a Facebook Ads Manager, I know certain questions and research I should conduct before working with a client. This is so that I can achieve the most effective results possible. In addition, my client will also benefit from this business relationship.

My attention has recently been drawn to some questionable management tactics used by certain ‘specialists’ and... to be honest... hearing this makes me angry. It is not acceptable to not provide understandable reporting or to publish ads before the creative and content have been approved, in my professional opinion.

Rather than getting angry, I would rather share what I have learned, in the hope that it will help other businesses. Here are six critical questions you need to ask your next Social Media Manager before you hire them, along with the ideal response/scenario:

1. Describe the types of businesses you've worked with and how long you've run Facebook ads?

A person's experience can be beneficial, along with references, testimonials, or previous client results - particularly if they have previously worked with similar businesses. It is imperative that they have some kind of experience with your product/service offering.

It may be helpful to ask your Ads Manager if they have testimonials, case studies, or portfolios if you are an e-commerce company.

2. Can you tell me about your qualifications and training?

Ideally, your Ads Manager will be educated and/or trained in marketing, digital marketing, communication, or specifically Facebook Advertising – however, it is not necessarily a requirement in my opinion. As a fast-paced industry, sometimes education and training are not adequate. Here, experience and past client results matter most.

As a preliminary step, I would inquire if they are a Facebook Agency Partner, or if they have a Facebook Blueprint certification - this is not a requirement, but it can be useful.

3. How do you run, test, and report on your advertising campaigns?

As part of their management, I would like to ask what is included in their strategy, how often and what is included in their reporting? In addition, I would look for an agency or manager whose communication lines are open, who is open about explaining metrics and results in a manner you can understand, and who does not simply put their campaigns in place and forget about them.

4. Can you tell me what is included in your Management package?

Generally, agencies or freelancers charge differently - some charge a flat fee (typically when spending less than $5-10K per month), others charge a percentage of ad spend, and there may also be set-up fees.

It is important that you request a breakdown of what is included in your management fee, as well as a proposal that clearly outlines what is included in your package. You should consider the following: set up fees (e.g. Facebook Pixel and Catalog), copywriting and creative elements, campaign funnels / ads, research, and reporting (how often and how does it appear).

5. Is it possible for you to run ads through my own Business Manager account?

Due to the fact that you own your business, you are entitled to own your pixel and your advertising account (your website + customer data). Make sure that the Ads Manager or Agency will create your Ads in your Business Manager and Ad Account, and that your pixel is owned by your Business Manager account.

6. What will you need from me to manage ads successfully?

Initially, your Manager will request content – video and photos, product information, updates about your business, access to your Google Analytics, information about your audiences, and access to your e-commerce store. I have found that the best form of business relationships I have is to be seen as an extension of my clients' teams. Notifying me of product updates, changes to sales pages, and information about upcoming sales is all information that your Ads Manager should use to optimize your Ads campaign.

Additionally, you should consider that Facebook & Instagram Advertising is only one component of your marketing plan, and an Ads Manager's role is to increase brand awareness, drive traffic, and optimise sales. Regardless of their level of service, a “good” Ads Manager will work with you to achieve the best results for your business - that means that they may generate traffic and interest but not sales. You may need to make adjustments to your website, sales page, product imagery, website experience, or product offering (e.g. Free Shipping over $xx).
